So, you’ve achieved a great milestone: you’re a plumbing business owner. Congratulations!

But this also means that you have to change your mindset. You can’t think like a plumber anymore. You have to think like a plumbing business CEO.

How do you make this shift? Here are 3 tips to help you become a better leader for your plumbing business.

Dress Like an Owner

The first thing you need to do is to upgrade your wardrobe. You can’t wear the same clothes that you used to wear as a plumber. You need to dress in a way that reflects your new status and authority.

You don’t have to go overboard and start wearing 3-piece suits, but you should definitely choose a smarter look that sets you apart from your employees. A polo shirt, a pair of khakis, and a pair of clean shoes can make a big difference.

We know it’s hard to let go of your plumber identity, but it’s a necessary change. Because dressing well does two things…

It helps you embrace your new role as a CEO. It makes you feel more confident and powerful. It also shows that you take your plumbing business seriously and that you are proud of it.

It makes your employees respect you more and follow your lead. It shows them that you are the leader they can trust and rely on. The leader who is responsible for their success and happiness.

So, ditch the uniform and put on a polo shirt. You’ll look and feel like a boss!

Think Like an Owner

The second thing you need to do is to expand your knowledge and network. You can’t rely on your plumbing skills alone to run a successful plumbing business. You need to learn new skills and meet new people who can help you grow as an entrepreneur.

And don’t be afraid of stepping out of your comfort zone. That’s where the magic happens. That’s where you learn and improve.

Don’t settle for being the smartest person in the room. Find rooms where you can learn from others who are smarter than you. Join online courses, webinars, podcasts, books, and blogs that teach you about plumbing business management, marketing, finance, and more. Attend events, conferences, workshops, and meetups where you can network with other plumbing business owners, experts, mentors, and potential partners and customers.

And don’t worry about entering new spaces that are too intimidating. You want that to happen, because that means you’re on the right path. If you’re not uncomfortable, then you’re not growing.

So, start educating yourself and surrounding yourself with like-minded people who support your growth as a plumbing business CEO.

Act Like an Owner

The third thing you need to do is to act like a leader. You can’t behave like a plumber anymore. You have to behave like a plumbing business CEO.

This means that you have to keep a professional distance from your techs. Be friendly, but not friends. You have to show them that you are the leader they can trust and rely on.

You’re not one of the “guys” anymore.

You’re their boss.

And if you need help, ask for it. Don’t be shy to seek advice from someone who has more experience than you. Find mentors, join masterminds, and invest in yourself. Learn from the best and apply what you learn to your plumbing business.

That’s how you become a great leader for your plumbing business!

And there you have it! The 3 steps that will help you ditch your plumber mindset and evolve into a

plumbing business CEO.

Don’t fret about your new identity being too stuffy or not blue-collar enough. You’re no longer blue-collar; you’re a plumbing business owner! And that’s something to be proud of, not ashamed of. So celebrate your new identity with style!
